TIPS ON HOW TO PROTECT PETS FROM SUMMER HAZARDS: DEHYDRATION, HEATSTROKE, AND MORE.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET IS DEHYDRATED OR EXPERIENCING HEAT STROKE? WHAT ARE THE BASIC PRINCIPLES THAT CAN PROTECT YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND FROM SUMMER HAZARDS?

We've rounded up the top tips to help your dog beat the heat and stay healthy this summer. without further ado, let's begin!

Some things might seem obvious but it’s important to pay your attention to:

  • Walk your pet early in the morning or in the evening when the weather is cooler.

  • Ensure your pet has access to a shaded area, whether it's in your yard, at the beach, or any other location.

  • Remember that your pet's paws are vulnerable to hot asphalt. If possible, choose grassy surfaces instead. Test the pavement with your hand; if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paw pads.

  • If your dog is active, provide frequent breaks for them to cool down.

  • Always look after your pet. Just because the weather may not be excessively hot for you doesn't mean it's comfortable for your pet. Watch out for signs such as extended tongue, wobbling, or other signs of distress, which indicate the need to shorten walks and seek shade.

These tips can help you protect your pet from summer hazards, including dehydration and heat stroke. Keep your furry friend safe and healthy during the warm months!

AVOID HEAT STROKE

When it comes to cooling your dog, it's crucial to prevent heat stroke. A dog's normal temperature ranges from 37.7 to 39.4 degrees Celsius.

Heatstroke occurs when a dog's temperature reaches 40.5 degrees Celsius or higher, posing a risk of organ damage.

If you notice these symptoms, take immediate action. Move your dog to a cool place and use a damp cloth or towel to wipe them down. Placing a damp towel on your dog's belly can help in cooling them. Pay attention to the inner thighs, stomach, and soles of the feet where there are large blood vessels.

Offer your dog cool (not cold) water slowly. Drinking too quickly can cause vomiting, which is not beneficial. After the dog has cooled down a bit, it's advisable to consult a holistic vet to ensure there is no internal damage.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF HEAT STROKE INCLUDE:

  • Heavy panting

  • Dry or pale/light pink gums

  • Thicker saliva than usual

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Loss of balance

  • Fainting or loss of consciousness

  • Rapid heartbeat

GET A NATURAL FIRST AID KIT

Having a first aid kit on hand during the summer is highly valuable, whether you're hiking, participating in a marathon, or simply enjoying outdoor activities with your pet.

A well-equipped first aid kit can help protect your pet from infections and soothe unpleasant insect bites, ensuring their well-being during your summer adventures.

Gel with arnica. We have used the gel from the brand Weleda; however, it is important not to apply the gel directly to the wound. Also, ensure that the pet does not lick the gel.

Calendula officinalis. Calendula officinalis or the pot marigold is known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. It helps accelerate healing and is an excellent source of vitamins E and A.

Prepare a solution by adding ¼ teaspoon of salt to a cup of filtered water. Then, add the recommended amount of calendula tincture (depending on the manufacturer you choose). Soak a cotton swab in the liquid and apply it to the affected area 2-3 times a day.

Yarrow. Yarrow is both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. It aids in tissue regeneration and stops bleeding. It can be used on bruises, sprains, cuts, bites, burns, and stings. Pour some yarrow tea and moisten a cotton swab with it to clean the affected area.

Horse balm. For severe bruises, you can use horse balm, which is available in large stores or veterinary clinics.

DO NOT SHAVE YOUR PET'S FUR

Some people believe that shaving a dog will help them cool down, but this is a myth and can be dangerous for your dog. Your dog's coat actually helps keep them cool and protects them from the sun. Shaving their fur allows the sun to reach their skin, which can lead to overheating, sunburn, and even skin cancer.

Grooming a dog is beneficial, especially for pets with long or double coats. It's important to take care of knots and tangles in the fur, as removing them allows the dog's fur to breathe more easily and keeps your four-legged friend refreshed.

DEHYDRATION

Unlike humans, dogs can't sweat to cool themselves down. However, if your pet is overheated, you may notice increased licking, salivation, and pale eyes. To check for dehydration, gently squeeze a bit of your dog's skin and lift it up. If it quickly comes back, they are fine. If it returns slowly, it indicates dehydration.

Remember that dogs with darker fur absorb more heat than those with lighter fur. Additionally, overweight dogs are at a greater risk of dehydration.

Ensure your dog always has access to fresh, cool water. You can also create your own water electrolyte solution by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil in 1 liter of clean water. This will help replenish important cellular salts and minerals for hydration, blood pH, and the nervous system.

NEVER LEAVE A PET IN THE CAR!

Even if it's just for a few minutes, never leave your pet in a car. Even on relatively mild days, the temperature inside a closed car can quickly rise. On a 29-degree day, it can reach 38 degrees within 10 minutes, and after 30 minutes, it can be as high as 45 degrees. It's best to leave your dog at home or take them somewhere they can go with you.
